What is the best diet for Hypothyroidism?

Hypothyroidism causes many symptoms including weight gain, depression, constipation, dry skin and extreme tiredness. This happens when the Thyroid gland which is located in the base of the neck becomes sluggish and doesn’t produce enough hormones required for the body to function at its best. This article will explain what the best diet for Hypothyroidism is and why some foods should definitely be included and I will also explain what foods to avoid with Hypothyroidism.

We are always told to have a health balanced diet in order to be healthy and get all the nutrients our body’s need. It can be difficult for some when changing diet especially if they have always eaten the same diet up until now. In order to get better a change in diet is needed and things like junk food and unhealthy snacks should be dropped. Once your symptoms start to disappear, you’ll be feeling much better and glad that you changed your diet.

The best diet for Hypothyroidism is one which contains food rich in the amino acid Tyrosine and this is because Tyrosine is joined with Iodine by the Thyroid gland to produce Thyroid hormones. There are many foods which contain Tyrosine so try to include as many as you can in your diet. The following is a list of foods containing Tyrosine:

• Chicken
• Pork
• Fish
• Legumes
• Dairy products
• Avocados
• Bananas

The best diet for Hypothyroidism should have foods which contain the mineral Selenium. This mineral is used by the body during the conversion of the Thyroid hormone Thyroxine (T4) in to the more active hormone Triiodothyronine (T3). The following is a list of foods containing Selenium:

• Brazil nuts
• Tuna
• Beef
• Cod
• Turkey
• Eggs
• Cottage cheese

The above foods, if included in your diet will really help to give your Thyroid gland the boost it needs by providing all the ingredients necessary for it to function properly. Now you might not see results straight away but if you stick with the diet it makes sense that your body will start to heal and you’ll soon start to see things happen such as a lift in your mood or an increase in energy.

Now that you know which foods to include in the best diet for Hypothyroidism, it is important to talk about which foods to avoid with Hypothyroidism. Some foods which are normally considered healthy options can give problems to people with an underactive Thyroid and this is because they contain a substance called a goitrogen. Goitrogens can suppress Thyroid function because they interfere with Iodine uptake and so it is important to know which foods contain goitrogens. These foods can be eaten but only if they are cooked thoroughly and this is because thorough cooking inactivates the goitrogens. The following is a list of foods containing goitrogens:

• Broccoli
• Cabbage
• Kale
• Mustard greens
• Turnips
• Peaches
• Pears

To conclude, the best diet for Hypothyroidism is a diet rich with foods containing Tyrosine and Selenium. Foods containing goitrogens should be avoided but can be eaten in if cooked thoroughly but even then I would only recommend eating them in moderation.
